How to Watch a Meteor Shower

Meteor showers reward simple preparation: the right night, darker surroundings, a broad view of the sky and enough patience for your eyes to adapt.

Get away from bright lights if you can

Fainter meteors become harder to see under direct lamps, bright phone screens and urban skyglow. SunPoint can help you think practically about open sky and viewing direction, but it does not yet certify dark-sky quality or assign Bortle classes.

Choose the right night

Use the event peak and Moon conditions as your starting point. A meteor shower with a dark Moon and clear sky is usually more promising than a bright-Moon night.

Find somewhere darker

Move away from bright streets and direct lamps where practical. Even screening nearby lights from your eyes can improve dark adaptation.

Find a wide open view

You do not need a perfect horizon bearing. You need as much open sky as possible, with fewer trees, buildings and lights in your field of view.

Where to look

Use the radiant as a general reference, then watch a broad area of sky. Do not use binoculars: they narrow your field of view and make meteor watching harder.

Comfort and safety

Choose a safe, legal place to stand or sit. Bring warm clothing, avoid trespassing, and plan how you will leave before you settle in for a long watch.

Do I need binoculars for a meteor shower?

No. Use your eyes because a wide field of view is better.

How long should I watch?

At least 30–60 minutes if conditions are good. It takes time for your eyes to adapt and meteors can arrive unevenly.

Can I watch from a city?

You may see bright meteors, but artificial light and urban glow will hide many fainter ones.

Where should I look?

Generally toward the radiant region, while keeping a broad view of the sky.
