A meteor-shower radiant is the point in the sky that meteors appear to come from. It is useful for orientation, but it is not the only place to look.

Simple definition

The radiant is where shower meteors seem to trace back to if you extend their paths backwards across the sky.

Perspective effect

The meteoroids are travelling on similar paths, but perspective makes them appear to spread out from one region, like railway tracks converging in the distance.

Why the shower is named after a constellation

Meteor showers are often named for the constellation near their radiant. The Perseids are named because their radiant lies in the Perseus region.

Why looking directly at the radiant is not ideal

Meteors near the radiant can look short. Meteors farther away can leave longer visible trails, so a wide relaxed gaze is better than staring at one point.

Radiant altitude

When the radiant is low, fewer shower meteors are usually visible. When it rises higher, the shower can become easier to observe, assuming sky conditions are good.
